Lekkerland Nederland B.V. is seen in the Netherlands pre-eminently as 'The Convenience Company'. The company primarily supplies petrol stations, kiosks, confectionery stores, tobacconists, wholesalers, fast-food chains, canteens and convenience stores with a complete range comprising tobacco articles, sweets, drinks, snacks, fast food products, fresh products, non-food articles and telephone cards/e-vouchers. With branches in 12 European countries, this company fulfils a pioneering role in the area of convenience. With a total of 130,700 customers, 7,401 employees, 48 branches and 1,253 lorries, Lekkerland is prominent in the European market.

Objective

Lekkerland's existing systems offered insufficient scope to deal flexibly with the rapid expansion and policy changes. Preventing data loss in the event of disasters and minimisation of failure in the business process headed the list of priorities at Lekkerland.

Two significant objectives:

  • The data must remain directly accessible to the user organisation of Lekkerland for not one but three years;
  • The processing time for various background processes had to be drastically reduced in order to be able to process more orders and to enable 'real-time' management overview.
Solution

As the solution a Twin Data Center based on IBM technology was chosen. It started with the introduction of physically separate locations; starting point was the possibility to implement duplicate systems able to mirror all the data.

The Twin Data Center is basically made up of:

  • 2 x IBM High-end Unix Servers (pSeries 670 (p670). Selected for their expandability and scalability.
  • 2 x IBM SAN (Fibre Array Storage Technology 900(FAStT900)) Selected for their reliability and availability.
